The Best Dive Spot In Bali

Every scuba diver of all levels can enjoy the magnificent diving in Bali. The best dive sites for beginners are around Amed, Padang Bay, and Pulau Menjangan which have very light or often no current at all.
Bali offers even more opportunities to those advanced divers, with many drift dives such as around Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan and Candidasa.
The current can sometimes be very strong and several dive sites around Bali should be treated with care and respect.

There are 3 scuba diving zones around Bali:

  • South Bali (Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, Sanur)
  • East Coast of Bali (Padang bai, Candidasa, Tulamben, Amed
  • North West Coast of Bali (Menjangan Island, Permutaran, Lovina, Gilimanuk).

The best dive sites in Bali are:

  • Liberty Ship Wreck, One of the Best and Easiest Wrecks in the World!
  • Manta Point, to observe the superb Manta Rays!
  • Crystal Bay, to spot the rare Mola Mola!
  • Secret Bay in Gilimanuk, a must dive for any Underwater Macro Photographer

CANDIDASA

Scuba diving in Candidasa is simply amazing! The best dive sites are around the four small rocky islands of Gili Tepekong, Gili Biaha, Gili Mimpang and Gili Selang. Many people say this is THE best diving in Bali! And the visibility is often excellent. The water is sometimes a bit chilly and a 3 mm wet suit could be a good idea to keep warm.

These islands are famous for the Sharks including manyspecies: Whitetip and Blacktip reef Shark, the rare wobbegong Shark, the veryrare Cat Shark and even Hammerhead if you are lucky!

There are also regular encounters with the giant Mola Molaalso called Oceanic Sunfish during the right season (August to October). Thecoral is so superb and very healthy.

AMED

Amed is a very good diving spot for Macro and Muck Divingfans. You will find there many critters and small weird stuff to discover. Moreover Amed is a very affordable diving location and makes a perfect base togo diving by the famous USS Liberty Ship Wreck in Tulamben.

It is not only divers who can experience the amazingunderwater life here – walk just a few meters off the shore with your snorkeland flippers and you’ll feel like you have walked into the film set of FindingNemo – there are beautiful, bright, colourful fish and all sorts of rich marinelife to discover. And what’s surprising is that the vibrant coral is so closeto the shoreline (you can easily spend a whole day here).

MENJANGAN

Pulau Menjangan is a terrific dive destination for walldiving with a great opportunity to dive deep from 20 to 60 metres. The wallsare magnificent with great gorgonian sea fans, sponges and small caverns toexplore along the wall.

Some years ago Menjangan island was also world famous forits flat reef corals but after bombings, El-nino effects and coral bleachingover the last twenty years, it is no longer the case. However for the last fewyears the coral has been improving and is still very nice to discover.

Diving in Menjangan is also very rewarding for beginners.Especially due to the fact that the current is very light and the visibility isusually very good and can even be outstanding (50m +). Moreover, you can diveeasily on the reef flats around 10 metres deep. The walls and the verycolourful and vibrant soft and hard coral offer underwater macro photographersspecial opportunities to capture some beautiful shots.

NUSA PENIDA/NUSALEMBONGAN

Diving around Nusa Penida is just fantastic! It offers incredible dive sites where you have great chances to see the famous and rare Mola Mola also called Oceanic Sunfish. The best period to spot it is from August to October.

The Mola Mola usually live very deep (and therefore not easyto see) but during these months they come up to shallow waters to be cleaned oftheir parasites. During this period divers from all over the world come to Baliespecially for the Sunfish and it can be a good idea to book your dives inadvance as they can get pretty full.

The best place to see the Mola Mola is the dive site Crystal Bay. However the current can be strong and tricky and it is not always possible to dive there.

One of the most famous dive sites around Bali is Manta Point where numerous manta rays come all year round to enjoy the cleaning station. Seeing Manta Rays there is not always a 100% guarantee but they are there almost every day so you have a good chance of spotting them. Also some dive companies offer money back if you do not see the Manta Rays. The surrounding is very beautiful with limestone cliffs all around the bay.

PADANGBAY

Scuba Diving in Padang Bai is one of the best around Bali. There are several very good diving sites just a few minutes away from the main beach. Most of them are perfect for beginners or for diving courses.

But there are also more challenging diving sites withcurrent and great chances to spot Reef Sharks, various Rays, Pelagic fishes andlarge schools of fishes!

It is a really sought after destination for macro lovers and underwater photographers! They will be delighted by wonderful night diving in the Blue Lagoon. They can find there leaf scorpion fish, ghost pipefish, pygmy sea horses, many rare nudibranchs, frogfish, the famous Spanish dancer and the very rare Cat Shark and Wobbegong sharks! And all that in shallow and calm water!

PEMUTERAN LOVINA

Diving in Permutaran is actually quite good with clear water, no current and nice coral but nothing extraordinary (compared to so many of the amazing dive sites that Bali has to offer!). Good place for beginners and for snorkelling too.

It is much more interesting to dive there at night when youcan see small weird creatures. Most of the dive sites are coral slopes goingdown to 25 m deep. Above 6 m deep, the coral tends not to be in such goodhealth due to the El Nino effect back in 1998.

The reefs are mostly covered with gorgonians, sponges and soft coral. You can spot all the usual reef fishes as well as (if you are lucky) the Manta Ray!

All of the dive sites are very close to the diving resortsand are reachable within a short boat ride, perfect for night diving and tospot the superb tiny Mandarin fish.

TULAMBEN

The Tulamben Liberty ship wreck is a must do for any diversgoing to Bali. The wreck is humongous (120 m) and is a fantastic playground toexplore.

If you are a beginner diver it is a unique opportunity to scuba dive a world class wreck dive site. If you are an experienced diver try to go further to the deeper part of the wreck around 35 m deep and look at the wonderful bow gun covered with Coral. It is a great photo opportunity! Moreover for macro lovers you can also find the rare pygmy seahorse in the area. All over the wreck you will spot schooling fishes, trevallies and barracudas looking for their next meal and Blacktip Reef Sharks patrolling the area. On the sandy part, watch the garden Eels dance and try to spot the giant Sweetlips often there.
