TAMAN UJUNG WATER PALACE

Taman Ujung ‘water palace’, with its complete and official designation of Taman Sukasada Ujung, is located in the village of Seraya in Karangasem regency. It’s the sister site of Tirta Gangga, also built by the late king of Karangasem. The complex consists of various large pools and historic structures set against a backdrop of Mount Agung and the eastern shoreline.
The site suffered near devastation by showers of hot ash following the eruption of Mount Agung in 1963, and also weathered an earthquake in 1979. Restoration efforts throughout the decades helped it on its way to its current splendour, and it continues to appeal to both locals and visitors.

Goa Lawah is one of Bali’s most important temples. It features a complex built around a cave opening that is inhabited by hordes of bats. Its name simply translates to ‘Bat Cave’. The temple was established in the 11th century by Mpu Kuturan, one of the early priests who laid the foundations of Hinduism on the island.
It’s a popular stopover for locals journeying to the eastern parts of Bali, who come in with offerings and short prayers before continuing on with their travels. For foreign visitors, it’s often included in many temple excursions and is one of the first stops on tours to Candidasa and regions within the Karangasem regency. You can easily see the outline of Nusa Penida Island on the horizon from Goa Lawah.
KERTA GOSA

Kerta Gosa, also ‘Kertha Gosa’ and referred to locally as Taman Gili Kerta Gosa, is a historical landmark in Semarapura, the main town of the Klungkung regency in East Bali. Kerta Gosa forms part of the Puri Semarapura royal palace complex and features 2 main structures – a grand hall or the namesake Bale Kerta Gosa, which has ceilings filled with Kamasan-style paintings, and the Bale Kambang ‘floating hall’ or pavilion that’s surrounded by a moat.
The site dates back to 1686 when it was commissioned by Dewa Agung Jambe, then ruler of the Klungkung kingdom. It has undergone a series of restorations in the past (the latest in 2014) and is one of Bali’s most important historical sites.
